Jamming With St. Vitas, Recording 'First Contact' and More With Boozewa
Hello, thank you for joining us today. How are you?
I’m doing well. Just received my second round of vaccination and I’m feeling positive about this year fro the first time in a long time
Tell us a bit about your new album, what was writing and recording for this album like?
“First Contact” is not only our new album, it is our first. We made this demo tap entirely at the compound here where we live. Recorded everything to my old Tascam 4track cassette recorder, I mixed everything down and then we ran off the tape here ourselves. Every part of it was mad in house. Printer/screened/cut/assembled the covers, dubbed the tapes, stamped everything. Its 100% as DIY as it can get!
Given the current state of the world, did it poise any issues towards the completion of the album?
The current state of the world is actually why this demo came to fruition. Being locked down for a year with only being able to interact with those you live with for the most part led to the start of this band. We have all been friends for well over a decade and it just so happened that when the pandemic hit we were all living together. Three musicians in a house FILLED with gear was bound to lead to something.
Of course the current state of things isn't ideal, have you started to plan for what comes next once the world starts opening up again?
Not really. I work for another artist as a touring tech/stage manager and once work starts again I am sure we will be out for the majority of the year. Jess is a florist and currently has her entire 2021 booked wedding wise. Rylan is a cabinet maker and 2020 set him behind about a year as well. When things start kicking again I am sure we will be itching to get out there… I'm just not sure what it will look like. That being said when we can play…its on.
Tell us a bit about yourself as a musician, who influences you?
Personally, Neil Young is a HUGE influence on me. His vibe, hi work ethic and the fact that he just doesn’t give a SHIT about what he is “supposed” to do, he just does what wants. That resonated in everything I do. Or at least, I hope it does.
Who is your biggest bucket list band you've shared the stage with? Who would you love to share the stage with next?
BOOZEWA has yet to play an actual show, so really we haven’t jammed with anyone. Backwoods Payback (our other band) has jammed with just about everyone I could ever hope we would. From Scissorfight to High On Fire, to St Vitus to touring with Royal Thunder to just vibing at all times with Caltrop and Valient Thorr. Backwoods Payback has found itself really nestled in where we belong. I am sure BOOZEWA will as well.
What are some of the main themes behind the new album? What story are you trying to convey?
The demo just kind of came together. At one point we realized that we were writing songs faster than we could keep track of them. The demo is a nice selection of the first round of us jamming. Its exactly what we always love(d) about getting demo tapes. Its rough, its raw, its real. It’s the feeling and the idea behind everything we love. The next record we do will solidify it,
Last but not least, is there any message you would like to share with your fans?
Don’t give up. Stay Alive, Stay Healthy, stay positive and TRUST SCIENCE. We are getting close, and we can’t wait to play these songs and yell at each other again in a small dark room. We will be there soon….
Thank you so much for your time!
Thank you. I’m really stoked so many people seem to vibing on this thing we are doing! Its only getting better from here fam.
